REVIEWS: Stargazer Red Glitter Lipstick

If you've ever found yourself walking through the glitz and the glamour of Manchester's Arndale centre, you may - or may not - have noticed there's a quiet little corner that most people tend to avoid. There's a big, dull grey staircase plonked in the middle of the walkway leading up to the Food Court, under which rebellous teenagers hang around. The shops in this area of the centre are not what you'd expect to find in a shopping centre of this size. There's three fancy dress shops, some cheap looking nail bars and salons, a bridal dress shop and a Warhammer-style game shop.

An eclectic mix, one might say! It was the name of one of the fancy dress shops that actually drew me to the area, it's called 'Luvyababes'. How could I not go in? As it happened, I was actually looking for some facepaints anyway and they didn't have what I was looking for, so I tried the next one, called 'Duty Free'. I didn't find facepaints, but what I found were shelves stacked full of Stargazer's make-up range and dyes from the likes of Directions, Manic Panic and again, Stargazer.

Now everytime I'm in the city centre, I always go to Duty Free without fail. The Stargazer lipsticks are a bargain at just £2.99, much cheaper than what you'd expect from the likes of Rimmel and Maybelline! They had some pretty looking shades so I grabbed a couple to try, inlcuding this red number.

 DSC_1614
 DSC_1642DSC_1629

I didn't notice this at the time, but if you look really closely at the lipstick, you'll notice it has tiny little flecks of gold in it. The lipstick in question is a fairly box standard red, the kind of red I associate with Christmas time and Coca Cola!

 DSC_1606

Upon application it felt a bit gritty, as if my lips were receiving an unexpected exfoliation. I was more than just a bit disappointed with the lack of pigment, it's nowhere near as opaque as I like my lipsticks to be. The finish is semi-glossy, the glitter does mattify it a little but it isn't actually all that apparent. Gutted! I guess the old adage is true: You get what you pay for.

As for longevity, well it lasts me two hours before fading away into a bright red stain on the lips. By this time the glitter has completely disappeared, though I'm not sure where to! I'm just hoping that my stomach isn't full of glittery bits!

All is not completely lost though. Instead of dispatching this to my corner of unwanted lipsticks, currently full of nudes and actually sounds like the name of an edgy song, I found a way of making this stuff work for me. Layering.

One on of my nights out, I applied MAC's Russian Red lipstick direct to the lips, before applying Stargazer's Glitter Red on top both for me and for a friend. This is where the magic happened: in low-lit areas you could see the flecks of glitter all over our lips, almost as if we'd been dabbing on one of those glitter eyeliners on to our lips!

However, in the pictures below, I've only applied the Stargazer lipstick.

 DSC_1537DSC_1536

While all is not lost for Stargazer's Glitter lipstick range, I don't think I'll be repurchasing this one or any of the other shades in the range. It isn't really good enough to use as a lipstick in it's own right, so even at £2.99 it just isn't worth it. However, their standard lipstick range is much, much better. They have a very wide range of shades, similar to Illamasqua, but at a fraction of the price.

I'll try to fit in another post before the new year, but if not I hope you all have a wonderful time full of fun, food and festivities!

Behind The Scenes: The WTFUK A/W Shoot

2012-01-25-19.07.19

I don't know about you, but I love the power of Instagram. Amongst those who don't really get it, it has a reputation as being a place where people share pictures of their food. Regular users of the service will all admit to having shared a gorgeous photo of the occasional brilliant meal, but we also know that there's much more to it than that.

Something I've picked up on this year, is online independent retailers are increasingly using Instagram as a place to show off their wares and create interest in their brand. This is how I came across WTF UK. They specialise in streetwear, and I have to say I was shocked to find that they're based in Manchester!

I got to know the lovely lady behind the label, Kizzy, who just happened to live quite literally around the corner! After she'd had a good browse through the blog, she invited me to model some of her Autumn/Winter line for their promotional photshoot. I ummed and ahhed for about a millisecond before saying: "YES!"

The shoot was to be held in two locations, which both just so happen to be two of my favourite places in Manchester, leafy Chorlton in South Manchester with its vast selection of trendy eateries and the Northern Quarter with its abundance of independent cafes, bars, retail outlets and street art all cobbled together in a mish-mash of industrial-era streets. Both perfect locations for her label.

Unfortunately, this meant I had to wake up early on a Sunday morning. I didn't even know 8am existed on a Sunday! Everyone involved in the shoot was due to meet at her house for a sneak-peek at her line before moving on to our locations. Entering her house was like walking into a tomb at the Valley of Kings (maybe a bit less sandy!), with Ancient Egyptian artwork lining the walls. As for the A/W line there seemed to be something for everyone, amazingly enough though Kizzy makes them all herself by hand! Impressive.

Below are my top picks from her line:

Slave Barb & Shred Crop Tee

 Halima-16

This crop is from the Limited Edition line and really caught my eye. I think what did it for me was the silver barbed-wires sewn across the arms, they looked crazy real to me but apparently they're made of leather!

I teamed this with my silver crushed velvet skirt to accentuate the silver prints on the crop.

Grafitti Acid Crop

 Halima-10

Another one from the Limited Edition line, this edgy grafitti printed acid crop which I paired with my unicorn skirt. The crop really clashes with the skirt and my hair, but for some reason it all goes perfectly together. I LOVE!

The Aquila Eagle Crop
 Halima-2

I adore this print! It's a representation of Aquila, the eagle that carried the thunderbolts for Zeus and Jupiter in Greek and Roman mythology. Hows about that for a cool job!

And here are a few of my favourite photos from the shoot:

 2012-01-25-19.00.032012-01-25-15.46.59

Needless to say, it was frrrrreeeeezing out there!

 2012-01-25-18.52.47
Artistes at work!

The make up for the day was sorted by Mel Vic Make Up. The theme for the shoot drew inspiration from Cartoons and Comic books which looked very 'pop art', something I've been leaning towards lately and was naturally excited about. The girls' eyebrows were painted on in fluorescant colours with huge gemstones used for bindhis! Hair was done by Caroline, who created some serious big hair using hair pieces and a faux bone, which reminded me of Pebble Flintstone!

 2012-01-25-18.55.072012-01-25-18.38.43

The shoot ran from 10am to 5pm, and as exhausting as it was we all had an absolute ball! Not even typically Mancunian wind and drizzle could dampen our spirits! I want to say a big thank you to the WTFUK team for having me and I'm seriously excited to see what's in store for 2014. Keep your eyes peeled!

WTFUK can be purchased online via their website or on ASOS Marketplace.

OUTFITS: Hello. Goodbye..

DSC_1931

As one year ends, another begins. It's goodbye to 2013 and hello to 2014!

Whilst I'm happy to see in 2014, I'm also a little sad to see 2013 go.

After all, it was my very own 'Year of Realisation'. I re-launched this very blog, transforming it from Designerspray to Fashionicide. I visited a place that I'd dreamt of visiting from a young age, but had always thought it impossible. When I got there, the colour of my skin and courage of my beliefs saw me detained for four hours. After some light interrogation and a few insults thrown at me, I made it through - to the Holy Land where I looked on in awe at The Dome of The Rock and Al-Aqsa, I spent time with a Palestinian family in Al Khalil and witnessed the harsh realities of being born Arab in Apartheid Israel.

When I got home, I learned how to make Jewellery. I dyed my hair purple. I decided I didn't like purple. Then I dyed it Turquoise. I modelled for an independent streetwear brand. Then I dyed my hair again, this time Lilac and Turquoise!

More importantly than all of that though, I managed to cut ties with as many of the toxic people in my life as possible, the ones that drain the life out of you to the point where you have no energy left to focus on what you really want.

I've found that surrounding yourself with inspirational, motivational folks really does have a lasting effect on you. And that's what I've done. I'm f**king looking forward to 2014, as scary as it might well be and with the plans I have in the pipeline I'm ready for some failings. I might not succeed in everything I do this year but you need to reach the sky if you want your life to shine (as Cut Copy would say, right?).

On a final note for 2013, it was also the year I opened my eyes to injustice, particularly the injustices that we as women face every day. Whether we like it or not, this is a (white) man's world and too many of us are unwilling or unable to face up to that fact. The sooner we do, the sooner we can fight the power. Take a look at this site for plenty of examples of what women have to deal with on a daily basis:

To end on a positive note, here's a 90s nostalgia-themed song from Cut Copy.

REVIEWS: Babyface Pure Protein Treatment - Goodbye mushy, gummy hair!

DSC_2396

Coloured hair is awesome, truly it is. But it isn't all glamour, it's not a case of whacking it on and leaving it be. The colouring process is like a storm that relentlessly batters your hair, sucking all of the life out of it. In order for coloured hair to look great, a lot of hard work goes into maintaining not only the colour but also the condition of the hair. Without this hard work, it would look scraggly, faded and generally unappealling. Having said that, I think it's definitely worth the effort!

As some of you may know, I went a bit colour crazy with my hair in 2013. To begin with I just had a Turquoise ombre, then I went all-out purple, decided I didn't like that so went all-out turquoise for most of the year before going for a two-toned turquoise and lavender style in December. So you can imagine then that my hair has taken more than its fair share of punishment througout the year.

When it came to going turquoise, I had to bleach my hair twice to get the colour right. When I did eventually manage to get the colour spot on, it was fantastic, bright and super vibrant - think of a Parrot's tail! On the other hand, my hair was knackered. It felt mushy and elasticy when wet, and extremely brittle when dry. To detangle, I was going through cases and cases of Johnson's No More Tears Detangling Spray with a rake - Ok, not really a rake, but at times it felt like I needed one!

In my attempts to bring back some life to my coloured hair, I've trawled the internet looking at all manner of remedies - some amateur home remedies, some professional treatments - I ruled nothing out. But it was protein treatments that really caught my eye. The first one I tried was Aphogee's 2 Step Protein Treatment which worked a treat! Unfortunately it's a messy, lengthy process - see my post on it HERE.

I'm always sad to see a product that actually worked for me run out, so when the bottle finished I was a little upset. But on the other hand I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to look at other protein treatments, perhaps something a little less messy and a little less time consuming!

eBay once again proved to be my saviour of sorts, where I found Babyface Pure Protein Treatment. The listing had paragraphs and paragraphs of literature singing it's praises. I don't usually like that, it's like the seller was trying just a little too hard to drum up interest. I had a look at the size of the bottle on offer, just one ounce! This intrigued me, so with my Aphogee finished and nothing to lose I thought I'd give it a whirl.

DSC_2400

A few days later and it had already arrived through the post, a good start! I knew the bottle would be tiny, but just holding it there in my hand actually quite surprised me! The instructions are printed on the label stuck to the bottle, and for me this was a good sign - it definitely wasn't going to be an Aphogee style all-nighter!

I shampoo'd my hair twice before towel drying, to the point where my hair was no longer dripping but still quite damp. I poured out a capful of the pure protein treatment and mixed it in with my conditioner.

 DSC_1839

In this case, I used Organix Hydrating Macadamia Oil conditioner. In the picture above, you can just about see the darker oily-looking liquid that is the Pure Protein treatment sat around the edges of the conditioner. You need to give it a good thorough mix to combine the two together.

I oversaturated my hair with the mixture and instead of running a comb through my hair, as directed in the instructions, I ran my fingers through my hair to evenly distribute the product. I'd recommend using your fngers if your hair is susceptible to breakage whilst combing. Then I popped on a shower cap and let the treatment work its magic!

The rebellious streak within me refused to follow the instructions to the letter, and instead of leaving it on for 20 minutes, I went for a whole hour instead to really give my hair a chance to soak up all the protein-y goodness before giving it a thorough rinse.

RESULTS

After rinsing the product out, I could feel a bit of a difference already. Detangling was a breeze, I didn't even need to use a separate detangler. A promising start!

If the start was promising, things were about to get a whole let better. I began to blow-dry my hair, and amazingly enough it dried a lot quicker than usual. Normally it takes an eternity to dry my hair, but after one application of this treatment it only felt like half an eternity! The more porous the hair is, the longer it takes to dry. So as my hair was drying quicker than before, the protein treatment was already taking effect.

Not only did my hair dry quicker, it also felt incredibly glossy, outrageously soft and silky smooth. For a moment, I let myself get carried away and imagined my hair in one of those old Timotei adverts from the 90s! But seriously, my hair felt a lot thicker and quite bulked up. The real acid test for hair condition is the elasticity test. Before the treatment, my hair was giving up very little resistance before snapping, whereas afterwards it was putting up a fight, stretching quite far before returning to it's normal length. YES! *swish*

Since then, I've used this on a monthly basis and my hair is going from strength to strength (pun fully intended!) and I've had a few people comment on how sleek and silky my hair is looking these days, which is quite the rarity as not many see beyond the colour!

 DSC_2822
 Shiny!

Just a few final points to mention: always use protein treatments sparingly, never ever use more than a capful. Over-use can overload your hair with protein, causing it to start breaking off. Personally, I will only use one protein treatment per month as my hair is quite damaged from the bleaching. If your hair is not damaged, please avoid using these treatments. There are plenty of internet horror stories out there of healthy-haired ladies destroying their barnets with protein treatments.

Have you ever tried protein treatments? What do you swear by?

Time marches on never ending. I was looking at my diary this morning and realised it's been over a week since I last blogged. What's all that about?

Well I just cannot begin to tell you how crazy it's been at Fashionicide Towers recently, especially as my fashion and jewellery line are finally beginning to take shape. I'm hoping it'll be out in the summer, and while I may be excited, the very thought of it exhausts me *buries head in pillow*

No matter how crazy it's been, I've kept thinking to myself: 'I'll make time to blog tonight', but alas there are just 24 hours in a day and I'm the kinda girl that needs at least 8 of them for sleep (as well as 8 for work, grr!). But tonight I've found some time!

Tonight's post is about injecting a bit of colour into your daily life, and this is something of particular concern to the ladies who don't have a great deal of time in the mornings. Because when you're in a rush every morning it's very easy to fall in to that trap of doing the same routine over and over. Why? Colour takes time, right? WRONG!

I've been sporting ombre eyeshadow of late, partly because it looks gorgeous and partly due to how fracking easy it is! You know how much effort that goes in to blending the darker colour in the crease? None of that here.

Of course, I used my 2013 Product of the Year: Sleek's Ultra Matter Brights Palette V1, but I added in a little bit of a twist by digging out my Sleek Ultra Matte Dark Palette. I know, I know, there's not that much of a difference between the two, but I assure there's enough of a difference to make the look work!

 DSC_2114

There's a lovely gradient effect going on here, I applied the shade 'Pout' to the inner corner, 'Bolt' on the outer corner and 'Highness' from the Dark Palette in the middle. As the colours are all related, they're already familiar with each other so minimal blending is required! Certainly nothing the MAC 219 brush can't handle. Once all the colours have been applied, it's as easy as swiping the brush across the bits where the colours meet, et voila!

And if you really fancy taking it to the next level, you can take it down to the lower lash line, simply rinse and repeat. Easy!

I have to admit, after a couple of days I did ask myself whether I'm at risk of falling in to the age-old trap of overdoing a fantastic look. It's so easy, I just wanted to do it every day! But the beauty about this look is, once you've got the basics right, it's so easy to just play around with the colours. And if you have one of those 100+ palettes knocking about (try looking under your bed, they're always there) the possibilities are endless!

In other news, I've been throughly enjoying the #lifeofamuslimfeminist hashtag that has been trending over the past couple of days on Twitter. It's been insightful and quite comforting for me to realise that I'm truly not alone in this patriarchical society. In fact, it's given me an idea ;)

DSC_2943

So I'm not actually a human mermaid. If I was, I'd have gills to breathe underwater with and I'd probably be in a horrible claustrophic tank at SeaWorld competing for attention with Shamu. No, I'm not quite a human mermaid but I did receive the most stunning top for Christmas. It's a multi-shaded irridescent turquoise sequin number with a strong resemblance to the scales of a fish!

The top is from Topshop, which came as quite a surprise to me as I never once saw it in store! Had I seen it, I'd have been all over it within seconds, naturally! Sadly though, it doesn't come with matching midi skirt, then I could take the mermaid look to a whole new (slightly frightening) level. Shame I have legs though. Ugh.

Instead, I had to make do pairing it with a prom mesh dress. The dress itself is lovely and a bit cutesie, but I'd definitely recommend wearing a pair of tights with it, as it can get quite uncomfortable what with the mesh scratching away at your skin all day.

It was a bit of a pain photographing the whole outfit, it's just *so* dark out, and photos just don't seem to turn out the way you want them to. I'm sure some of you can relate! Bring back long summer days please!

In some of the close-up shots you may notice my new nose ring! I'd already had my nose pierced twice in the exact same place before, but took out the piercing both times and let it heal. Well, I woke up one morning and thought: 'I want my nose ring back.' So I dug out an old (sterilised!) nose ring and tried to squeeze it in, but it only went so far before hitting a wall of flesh.

I toddled off to a piercing shop in central Manchester to have it re-pierced in the exact same place. I'd forgotten how odd, and painful, it feels to have a huge needle jammed up your nose! Anyway, I'm thinking I'll keep the nose ring for a bit if only to get used to having some metal in it. Seriously contemplating a septum piercing!

Hello my lovelies, it's been a little while since my last post. Ok so it's only been a couple of weeks but to me it feels much longer. You know when you're ill, you've got a sore throat and you begin to lose your voice? Well, I've come down with a serious case of Bloggeritis right now and my voice is croaking more than a 60 year old barmaid who's smoked 30 a day for the past 40-odd years.

I'm starting to feel that the blogging community has become a bit like Eastenders, not because of all the drama and back-stabbing, but because Eastenders has been running almost thirty years and you begin to wonder how? I mean, it's the same stories constantly regurgitated just with different faces. Classic case? Ian Beale. How many times has he been married? For me blogging has become a little bit like that, the constant regurgitation of the same old stuff.

I don't feel like I'm regurgitating the same old stuff, I feel that most of the blogging world is just going round in pointless, neverending circles. There are too many blogs that not only add nothing to the community, they actually detract from it. There's a basic lack of creativity or ingenuity and I'm flooded with 'reviews' that barely last three paragraphs. Three paragraphs?!! Are we at primary school here?

'I like the sun. It is nice. It makes me feel warm.'

Just for the record, there are plenty of fantastic blogs out there and I'm actually seeing a lot of newbies entering the scene offering something fresh and something different, which in turn inspires me to keep my own blog fresh! My gripe is really with the kind of blog that clearly lacks spark or passion for the chosen subject.

Aside from that, it's just been too gloomy (and windy) up north to even consider taking photos, having said that we are slowly crawling towards spring so there'll be more natural light and hopefully less wind and rain!

So why am I writing this post? Well I woke up today thinking: 'Fuck the wind, fuck the rain, fuck the blogger's block. I'm doing a post.' This one's just to ease me back in to the swing of things, to beat the block. And actually, I think it might have worked... ;)

 DSC_3206

I'm teasing you all a little with this photo, I'll be posting an OOTD featuring this beautiful dress in the near future. I just cannot get over how stunning, and original, it is!

 DSC_3293v2

I also created this new look for my eyes, it wasn't intentional but it matches up with the dress perfectly!

DSC_3284

You can just about make out my eyeshadow here, but more importantly check out my darling Wilhelmina pretending that she doesn't want to kiss me.

Just by way of a little update, Illamasqua featured me on their Instagram account a couple of weeks ago! I was surprised and thrilled by this but I got a few nasty comments! A few haters focused on my eyebrows being too close together, I wasn't bothered because that's just the way my brows are, but I was a little taken aback by this as I don't understand how anyone following Illamasqua could be so vile! I got talking to another blogger calledJayne who also experienced something similar when she was featured there too. It's particularly shocking to me given Illamasqua's continued support for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, I wonder if these girls even know of this tragedy?

Either way, I'll be back soon with some new posts in the coming weeks. And yeah, I'll be keeping my eyebrows just the way they are... ;)

Peace.

Hello my lahs!

It's just been one thing after another lately! Fresh after recovering from my spate of Bloggeritis, I now found myself bogged down with a nasty cold! I'm talking headaches, shivers, sneezing, coughing and a distinct huskiness to my voice. Tell me, are there any more symptoms I need to look out for? Ugh!

Well, all this nasty cold business took my plans for the weekend, scrunched them up into a little ball and threw them in to the bin. See, colds are bad, they're not even environmentally friendly enough to recycle paper. Anyway, I still feel like a shell of my usual healthy self and I actually think it's affected my sanity, causing me to do my very best Sugar Brown impersonation at least 30 times a day. When I say 'very best', read 'very worst'!

I'm desperate to recover in time for Friday. For Valentine's Day? No, I've never liked the idea of Valentine's day. Call me a killjoy if you like, but for me it's another one of those 'celebrations' that encourage people to be nice to someone specific for one day and c*nts every other day. Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day: why can't we just be nice to people all year round? Besides, Valentine's day also promotes the killing of innocent, helpless flowers to be given as 'gifts' that will then rot away in whatever vase they're hastily stuffed in to. Modern love baby.

No, on Friday it just so happens I'm heading down to London Fashion Week! I'd never even been to London until 2012 (I think, maybe 2011?) when I took a trip down to meet some lovely bloggers, but now I seem to be down there every other month. Any excuse, and I'm there!

As for LFW itself, I'll be heading over to some shows on the Saturday and I'm considering wearing this skirt. I saw it in River Island and was immediately taken by it, not realising the slit going three quarters up the leg. But oh my, the slit..

Seriously though, this is the first time I've ever had a skirt with a slit and I feel like Jessica Rabbit when I wear it, she's so glamour and wow I'd so go girl for her...

London Fashion Week AW14: Liz Black

London Fashion Week!

It happened and it was awesome.

I've been dying to go to London Fashion Week for a good few years now, and whilst I've been invited on numerous occasions, for one reason or another I've never been able to accept. Well, screw that. Toni & Guy invited me down again for the A/W 2014 shows last weekend and I made sure nothing would stop me this time!

I brought along the lovely Aneela with me to Liz Black's presentation at Freemason's Hall and I have to say it was well worth the effort to get down there. The first thing that caught my eye was the make-up, I was blown away by it! I wanted to make the most of the opportunity I'd been given to go backstage, so in between shows I was getting in the faces of the MUAs and Stylists firing all sorts of questions at them. It turned out that Liz Black collaborated with a brand called Face Lace. I'd never heard of them before, so I googled them once I got home and found they provide ready-to-wear make-up in sticker format! They're a bit like tattoos minus the commitment, literally sticking art all over your face! I'm thinking a huge order is on the horizon...

Liz Black's models had their eyes adorned with the most beautiful Lobster prints and fuchsia eyeshadow, I know it sounds a bit bizarre but just take a look!

The clothing on show was all very minimal, yet with a certain air of rich elegance and a strong theme of nudes, blacks, reds, blues, lips and moustaches. I overheard a couple of people in the audience talking of how the show seemed to be heavily influenced by Salvador Dali. I'm no art buff, but I knew Dali was an artist with a strange love of melting clocks so I didn't see the connection. As it turns out though, he was also rather fond of big lips and eccentric moustaches!

Anyway, I was a little bit surprised about how the actual presentation unfolded. I expected it'd be a catwalk style thing where the models elegantly walked up and down the runway but no, this wasn't anything like that at all. This was more like an Art Gallery scene: the audience stood around like seasoned art-lovers casting their eyes on the live sculptures that were the models, walking slowly, posing together, touching each other and so on. To add to surrealism of Dali's Lips & Moustaches, one of the models even made her entrance by breaking through the shell of a human-sized egg.

All of this added up to quite an unusual, but interesting, experience. I'm of the opinion that fashion and beauty can be so artistic that it is an art form in itself, and this presentation left me in no doubt of that at all. DIY: Stacklaces - Re-invigorating Your Necklace Collection!

Stacklaces - The ultimate statement pieces!

On one of my recent trawls through the internet hunting for interesting things, I stumbled across a company on Instagram selling 'statement' necklaces. These definitely weren't the kind you'd find in the likes of H&M or even Topshop. No, these were Stacklaces.

The company in question is called Xevana, and their speciality is the Stacklace. What is a Stacklace then? Well, it's several necklaces stacked one on top of the other. Simple really, but what Xevana have done is save you all the hassle and faffing around by doing the stacking for you, and sell them as Super Statement necklaces all as one. I was seriously tempted to order, until I saw they were charging over £100 for the privilege.

These sorts of prices are a bit steep for most people, me included, so I couldn't justify parting with that much cash no matter how stunning the pieces looked. I figured I might as well go for the 'Blue Peter' approach and make my own (please note, you will need an empty bottle of washing up liquid later on). I'm really digging silver jewellery at the moment, so I picked three pieces from my collection and began to stack.

Here's a quick guide on how to create your own Stacklace:

THE NECKLACES

The silver diamante collar necklace purchased last season from Primark for around £6 to £8.

A chandelier style necklace recently purchased from H&M for £12.99.
 DSC_4129
A statement piece in itself, sort of already stacked also recently purchased from H&M for £14.99.

THE STACKING PROCESS

 DSC_4146

The first piece to go on was the collar, it's quite a wide piece so I thought it might act as a sort of frame for the other necklaces. I chose the chandelier to go next, as it's quite a low hanging piece and would add to the 'framing' effect, to help this along I clasped it to the loosest fit. For the final piece, I placed it over the top of the two others, making sure I clasped it as tight as possible to keep it high up on my neck.

RESULTS

 DSC_4158
DSC_4160

Well, would you believe it? How impressive does that look? It almost looks as though the three separate necklaces were designed to be stacked with each other. But what would you wear with such a piece? In my opinion, a basic outfit would work best, else you risk too much going on. In my case, I plumped for a sheer black tunic:

DSC_4070

This doesn't just add something extra to your outfit, this makes your outfit. The centre of attention will almost undoubtedly be taken away from your choice of clothes, as the Stacklace will quite justifiably hog the limelight.

Making your own stacklace need not be expensive, we've all got pieces of old jewellery hidden away somewere collecting dust. All you need to do is brush off that dust, find three (or more if you're brave!), and combine them to breathe new life into your collection. The total cost of my ensemble was just £35.98, much cheaper than Xenava's offerings but equally stunning.

Now that I've tried out the stacklacing, I'll be looking at my own jewellery collection from a fresh angle now. I can't wait to come up with some new combinations! I hope you've found this useful and are inspired to give it a try, if so send me some results!
Have you ever Stacklaced your necklaces? Would you wear this?

It's been a while, hasn't it?

Finally I've managed to get off my derrière and give the blog a bit of a spring clean. I've been complaining for ages now that the whole layout could do with a bit of a refresh, so last week I gave it a good clean out. How different does it look in white?

Anyways, to the outfit!

On my regular forays around the internet hunting for fresh new things, I often find myself on Alibaba looking at all the wonderful clothing being produced out in China, India and the like for our Western consumption. It's an exercise riddled with contradictions though as I can never buy anything there, firstly each manufacturer has a 'Minimum Order Quota' ranging from 10 to 10 thousand and secondly you can never be 100% certain that the clothing wasn't made by children locked up for 16 hours a day in a sweatshop.

This dress is one that I saw variations of on Alibaba, that I actually found over at Sheinside going for a steal at just £23. I was umming and ahhing for a little while wondering if it was made in a sweatshop in Shanghai and because of the collar. I really don't like collared dresses but the print on this swayed me: it oozes retro allure and is practically art on a dress. Collar or not, I was having it!

The more observant among you may have noticed that the whole outfit appears to be perfectly colour coordinated, however I didn't notice this until it was pointed out to me! Maybe I should be taking the credit for it though? ;)

You may also have noticed there's a flat next door up for rent, any Mancunian bloggers out there want a fun neighbour? Ha!

Have you had a recent revamp on your blog or bought any exquisite dresses lately?

HOLO NAILS // Color Club - Harp On It

Holographic nails!

Remember the infamous Gosh Holographic nail polish? I say infamous because it was so damn near perfect, yet so far away. It was absolutely beautiful, but I remember having to apply three coats to make it completely opaque. Not only that, it only lasted a day. Three coats, one day. The longevity is so bad, it turns out Gosh have rebranded it as a 'One Night Wear' polish!

Anyway putting Gosh to one side, I've been hankering after some holographic nail polish for a long, long time. Problem with that is there isn't really all that many decent ones out there, so I bit the bullet and purchased Color Club's 'Harp on It' from eBay for £8.99. I'd never purchased a Color Club polish before, so it was a mini-adventure in to the unknown.

 DSC_4490

Hello rainbow!

And now you see why I adore holograph so much! From afar, it appears to be a solid block of grey, but as you close in on it a mosaic of rainbow coloured specs appear like magic. I love that concept for two reasons: firstly, it reminds me of Manchester. The perception of it is a dull, grey, rainy northern city of gloom, but if you look closely you see a bright, vibrant city. And this is similar for people too, there's more to an individual than meets the eye. Check me out with my little philisophical ponderings... I'll shut up now!

So back to the polish, and the first thing to note is the application is like a dream. Effortless. The brush is the perfect size so there was no need for a clean up operation on the cuticles afterwards. It took two coats to give it an opaque look and I must say I love the finish, leaving a glass-like shine that wasn't dulled by my Sally Hansen Insta-Dri topcoat.

The colour is to die for, it looks like a plain, yet super shiny, metallic silver from afar, but just like when it's in the bottle, the closer you get, the more you begin to notice the little specs of rainbow magic.

Cue show-off shots...

 DSC_4471

Yes it applies well and yes it looks stunning, but how about longevity? Unlike Gosh's feeble attempt, Color Club have got it spot on and I was really impressed. The photos above were taken on Day 3 and not a single chip in sight, you can just about make out that the tips are beginning to fade but that aside, it's still pretty good. The first chip arrived on Day 5, which is good for me as I've been slacking with Nail Polishes lately. I've gone from doing my nails every other day to once a week.

I've spotted a couple of other holographic nail polishes by Color Club on eBay, it's oh so tempting aand might just get back on the wagon...

Face Lace - Splasheets // Making Your Face A Work of Art

Art on your face

Lovers of Art will often visit art galleries to admire the works of their favourite artists, whether that be in the form of a painting, sculpture, textiles, performance, photograph etc. But who is to say that make-up can't be art? Who is to say that our faces cannot be our canvasses?

Frequent readers of Fashionicide will be well aware that I've upped my game when it comes to eye make-up over the past year, evolving from doing quite basic looks to looks involving much more colour with some artistic touches. So it was with great interest then, that I spotted the models at Liz Black's show at Freemason Hall in February wearing some very intricate stickers around their eyes.

These stickers really caught my eye (see what I did there?), to the point that as soon I as I got back to the hotel room at night I was straight on to Google hoping to find out more. As it turns out Face Lace have quite an impressive line-up of products on their site, falling into two main categories: Pre-designed looks, and DIY sheets. The pre-designed looks are very impressive indeed, but the DIY sheets allow you to create some looks of your own. Naturally, I chose both!

They sent through a whole bunch of Splasheets of all different colours, within each sheet there's a range of various different splashy shapes with the idea being that you can create your very own look. With so much to choose from my brain went into overdrive thinking of all the possibilites, though if you look carefully enough I have posted a photo on my Instagram using one of the splats as a bindi!

The look I've created today using the splashes came about almost by accident. I was going through my usual make-up routine and inadvertently ended up with a monochrome look around the eyes, which reminded me that I've got black and white splasheets! The rest, as they say, is history.

I really like the whole concept behind these stickers, as they enable those who want to create amazing designs around their eyes, but lack either the time or the talent to do so, the opportunity to do so within seconds. Whereas the DIY sheets can take your looks to the next level, by adding a new dimension to your make-up.

You can purchase the stickers from Face Lace, the splasheets come in 6 different colours and cost just £2.92 per sheet. The pre-designed looks come in a variety of different sizes from £8.92 to £25.79. All stickers purchased are reusable. Get in!

SKIN CARE: Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

It feels like it was only yesterday, back in my teens when facial scrubs were all the rage. Remember St. Ives' Apricot Scrub? As much as I may shudder at the thought of the harsh little beads of apricot tearing away at my skin, until recently I remained fiercely loyal to the Blemish Control version boasting the anti-acne ingredient Salicylic Acid.

I really liked the idea of those gritty granules sloughing off the dead skin from my face, I guess it just felt like it was actually doing something. Apparently it was, but not necessarily something good. I heard it on the grapevine maybe a year or so ago, that the Apricot Scrubs cause microtears in the skin. I'm still not entirely sure how true that really is, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Fortunately, around about the same time, I was sent a bottle of *Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant. It's a rice based powder that also includes Papain and that magic ingredient Salicylic Acid, the dispenser also looks like a cute little homage to the classic Talcum Powder bottles from childhood... Ahh memories!

 DSC_4414

 DSC_4422

I was a little sceptical when I first opened her up and poured a little bit onto the palm of my hand. The idea is to wet your hands first, tip some powder on to them and rub together to form a creamy paste, then buff away at your face. It seemed like a gimmick, and then when I actually started buffing, the lack of grittyness caused me to immediately dismiss it as useless.

I'd formed the paste in my hands, applied to the face and massaged in circular motions for about a minute or so. Perhaps I was longing for the sandpaper effect of St. Ives, because this paste felt like it was achieving nothing. So I began to rinse it off, disappointed, only to notice that my skin felt softer and plumper! Once I'd patted my face dry my skin felt quite taut, but that could be a symptom of my combination skin. Either way, from looking in the mirror my face appeared to be clearer and my skin was actually glowing!

My only qualm with it is that it's too harsh for my skin for it to be used on a regular basis, so I use it at most twice a week which seems to do the trick. It really gives the pores a good clear-out, I've noticed that my milia have greatly reduced and the skin feels a lot smoother to the touch. I'm very impressed with how long this stuff has lasted me, I'm only using a 13g travel-size that's been going on strong for a good few months now with plenty left over still. I tend to tip out a small heap the size of a 50 pence piece. which is sufficient for the whole face.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a definite upgrade on your typical facial scrub and has changed the way I think about them too. After all, if gritty, sandpapery scrubs were the best way to go, why don't we just use actual sandpaper on our faces?!!

OUTFITS // Cut Out Fashion!

DSC_4634

I remember when I first came across 'Cut-out fashion', clothes where patches of material are cut out, exposing small sections of naked flesh to the world. I have to say that I wasn't really a fan, probably because most of the stuff I saw in that style were extremely tight bodycons. Don't get me wrong, I love a good bodycon as much as the next girl, but it just felt a bit much having big chunks of a dress missing!

All these years later though, and I can now say that I've given the whole cut-out thing a try with this little skater number. I've always found skater dresses to be awesome: fitted in the right places with a flare from the waist down. In this case the fitted areas are the cut-out bits and just to throw a spanner in to the works, it's snake print!

If I saw this whilst out on the high street, being honest, I probably wouldn't buy it but that isn't to say I don't like it. I really do, it's just that I'd have been put off by the cut-out section beneath the bust. What with the dress being black, it's pretty easy to style as it'll go with almost anything, particularly bright colours. Judging by the photos, you can see I wasn't quite brave enough to wear either no bra, or one small enough to be 'invisible'!

I paired the dress up with a lovely, colourful floral-print shirt and this beautiful statement necklace that seemed to go perfectly with the ensemble. The dress itself is stunning, I love the fitting and the cut of it and even the material (despite never liking animal prints much) was surprisingly good, adding a bit of depth to the dress. For me, this would definitely be one for nights out or summer days.

*Black Snake Print Skater Dress - RARE London // Burgundy Heels - Primark // Oversized Floral Shirt - Primark //  Rainbow Tear Drop Statement Necklace - Ali Express

Remember how I was talking about Instagram Sellers not so long ago? Well, I've seen a whole lot of gorgeous statement jewellery sold on these Boutique Instagram accounts for extortionate amounts. The majority of these Boutiques purchase their items from Ali Express or in bulk from Ali Baba at very cheap rates, and then sell them on for a hefty profit. One seller trades in 'Dupe Bags' - bags that look like designer ones - at £55 a bag, when they are available for as little as £5 on Ali Baba. That's £50 profit. So if you find something you really like on Instagram, just have a quick browse over at Ali Express. You might save yourself a few quid. ;)

NEW IN // Druzy Rings!

DSC_5051

In all honesty, I'd never heard of Druzy or Druzy Gems until the other week. Druzy is the glittering effect of tiny crystals over the top of a colourful mineral. A Druzy gem stone grows over millions of years, is relatively inexpensive when compared with diamonds, but they do have a certain sparkle to them. Very impressive, no?

By chance I happened to come across a photo of some Druzy stones on my travels around the internet and wondered if there was any jewellery out there making use of their beauty. As it turns out there are plenty, but the ones featured today aren't quite so impressive as they're dupes made out of that exotic material we call plastic, ha!

I'm always cheap when it comes to purchasing jewellery, I'm so fickle with it that I just know I'll always end up getting bored quickly so very rarely splash out. That being said, these faux-Druzies are very pretty, and the fact that I'd be wearing a little piece of our planet that started growing millions of years ago is fascinating, so much so, I could even be tempted to buy the real thing.

DSC_5044
 DSC_5058

It's hard to seperate the two of them, but I'm leaning towards the blue one as it has a little bit of added depth that can't quite be matched by a colourless gem. When the light hits, it gives off a dazzling rainbow glimmer!

The rings are adjustable, so can fit fingers of all shapes and sizes and don't occupy too much space on your fingers. I managed to bag these two little beauties from eBay for just £6.50. Bargain! LINK

Illamasqua's Pivot Eyeshadow

Illamasqua never disappoint, do they?

I've been on the prowl for a lime green eyeshadow for a long, long time and let me tell you, they aren't easy to come by at all. A cursory glance in the likes of Boots and Superdrug always leaves me underwhelmed, hit by wave upon wave of dull, neutral shades. Don't get me wrong, they all serve a purpose but we all need a bit of neon every now and then, right?!

Of course, my go-to for something different is always Illamasqua, and when I headed down the escalators towards their counter I had a good feeling. I was right to be positive, because this would be my first encounter with 'Pivot'.

DSC_3753
Mesmerising...

 DSC_3760

Pivot is intended to be a yellowy green eyeshadow, and to me those yellow undertones really shine through meaning it looks more like the flesh of a Kiwi or even the Kiwi flavoured Jelly Bean (both equally delicious by the way!)

From the packaging it's clear Pivot is intended to be matte, which immediately made me a little concerned it might be quite powdery. But when I was swirling my brush in the pan and patting it onto my eyelids I found very little loose powder at all. Another common drawback with matte shadows is the powder tends to make its way into my eyes, but the lack of loose powder floating about meant this wasn't an issue at all. The final major plus point is the pigmentation, it's very strong so I found I didn't need to pack the colour on. I would say that this will increase the life of it, but I know I'll use it so often it'll run out before I know it!

I paired this with a Cerise colour from the Sleek Ultra Brights palette (Nope, I still can't get over this palette). I was a little surprised by quite how well these colours matched up actually, like they were made for each other...

 DSC_4008DSC_3985

 DSC_4009

Illamasqua's Pivot will set you back a cool £15. I know that's quite steep for an eyeshadow, but in my opinion it's fully justified because it's an original and exciting colour of such high quality. There just isn't anything to match it in either respect out there on the high street.

So go on, be bold! ;)

Are you a brights or a neutral kinda person?

My First Encounter with Makeup Revolution!

DSC_5378

I honestly can't remember the last time I was this excited about a Make Up Launch. Even when Illamasqua come out with a new range, there'll be one or two things I'm eager to try, but the rest will be a bit 'meh'. It does seem at the moment we're being hit by wave after wave of neutrals. For me, neutrals are a bit like a dial-tone. You pick up the phone and hear the dial-tone, it's nothing to get excited about but it's always there. And seeeing as most new product lines are packed full of these inoffensive neutrals, I rarely get too flustered about their release.

Then out of the blue, a couple of days ago Liloo sent me a late night tweet about Makeup Revolution.

As it was so late, I was already in bed but I thought I may aswell have a look at the link she sent me and OMG, immediately my mind was blown. The variety of shades on offer is just unreal and the prices were so ridiculously low I had to rub my eyes a few times just to make sure I was reading this right: 12 Colour Palettes at £4 and Lipsticks for £1. Naturally, I put off going to sleep for a bit and placed an order there and then!

Ét Voila:

 DSC_5269

An explosion of colour!

The two large palettes are 'Matte Brights' and 'Acid Brights'. They are both really bright and I envisage plenty of fun experimenting with them.

Let's take a closer look:

 DSC_5096DSC_5104

The Full Scandalous Lipstick collection

(L - R) Scandalous Felony, Scandalous Depraved, Scandalous Immoral, Scandalous Vice, Scandalous Crime

These lipsticks were advertised on the website at just £1, so being the absolute lipstick whore that I am, I bought the lot. At the time I was thinking: 'They're giving this stuff away!'  and later when I got to the cart I realised that, quite literally, they were, if you purchase the entire lipstick range, they give you one of them free. So these 5 cost £4, not £5!

The colours remind me a lot of Lime Crime, I did a post on one of their lipsticks some time ago mentioning how amazing it was, but because they're so expensive and inaccessible I've always been on the lookout for alternatives. It looks like Revolution could well be that alternative, I've not tried them all yet, but as I'm a complete sucker for unorthodox lipsticks, I'm seriously looking forward to!
 DSC_5205

The Full Vamp Lipstick Collection

(L - R) Black Heart, Rebel With a Cause, 100% Vamp

Not quite as bright or bold as the Scandalous collection but these were also £1 each. Why not? And anyway, another fab offer when purchasing the whole collection means you get 1 free so in total £2! (By this time I'd passed out on the bed due to a mixture of elation and disbelief!)

 DSC_5346

The Full Scandalous Eyeshadow Collection

(T - B) Get Ready!, Acid!, Go!, Rave All Night

Guess how much these cost? Yes, that's right. £1. There are actually 5 shadows in the collection, but the pink one was missing from my order so I'll have to get on to them about that. Again though, if you purchase the whole collection you (should) get one of them free.

I have to say, shopping on the Revolution website was a bit like shopping at a brand new, exotic make up counter in Poundland. I'm looking forward to finding out about the actual quality of these products though. The entire haul came in at just £20, including delivery. The order was placed on Tuesday and it arrived through the door on Thursday. I honestly don't know how they'll manage to stay in business!

As you may have gathered from the mugshot at the beginning of the post, I've already started playing around with some of the palettes and lipsticks. Below are the products I used to acheive the above look:

 DSC_5195

Scandalous Vice

 DSC_5198

This lipstick is bang on tangerine, the formula is quite creamy and leaves a glossy finish. It appears quite sheer on me, giving the appearance of an orangey hue on the lips, but not quite full-on orange. In order for this to work on my lips, I lined and coloured in my lips with an orange lip liner from Barry M.

The longevity isn't great, I felt I needed to top up my colour every few hours. Priced at a £1, you can't really complain too much though. I'm not a huge fan of glossy lips either, so in order to get the matte effect I used the old school technique of blotting the lips with tissue paper and applying translucent powder on top.

 DSC_5355

Go!

This appears an=s an electrifyingly bright neon green in the pan however it does lose a little bit of its edge when transferred on to the eyes. The finish is very matte, and with a little help from a primer, it lasts all day. It does appear quite chalky at first, however as you layer it on in pursuit of the neon green look that chalkiness begins to fade. The pigmentation definitely isn't as strong as something like Urban Decay but packing this stuff on at least brings you close. For £1, there's no complaints from me!

Cue Mugshots

 DSC_5384DSC_5369
 DSC_5376

I definitely do not regret this haul whatsoever, for just £20 I've bagged myself quite a wide range of shades for both my lips and eyes. This brand is what MUA should have been, there's just so much to choose from, there's bound to be something for everyone.

The great thing about this brand is it should make bright and bold colours much more accessible, currently you have to go a long way to find something out there like this, and even then it's often a bit pricey. I believe Makeup Revolution will be hitting Superdrug stands on April 9th, here's hoping this really is the beginning of a revolution, make up style!

Have you tried Makeup Revolution yet?

OUTFITS // The Eye of Horus... And Friends

It's quite rare that I'll be wandering my way down the high street and come across an item of clothing that screams at me: 'online'. I've wrote about this quite a lot recently, but the high street retailers have developed this habit of sticking to 'safe' items, meaning their ranges are often quite inoffensive and generally just bland.

When I first moved to Manchester, I was obsessed with the clothing store Ark. It was always a bit like a cheaper, edgier version of Topshop, but for whatever reason I hadn't paid a visit for a year or so and all of a sudden I'm walking around inside the Arndale and realise they've actually relocated! They stock a wide variety of brands from Lavish Alice to RARE London as well as their own line too.

Whilst I was in there, this dress caught my eye. Full of all sorts of ancient symbolism that seemed to clash so much with itself it actually worked! Of course, I bought it, rushed home, threw it on and got some OOTD photos taken within the hour! As much as the symbols draw your attention, my favourite part of this dress is actually at the shoulders. It's not one of your average off-the-shoulder numbers, this is the perfect 'peek-a-boo'!

That being said, how can I not mention the print?! I absolutely lived and breathed Egyptology when I was at school and was determined to be the Asian female version of Howard Carter when I grew up and although I did manage to visit The Valley of The Kings, I didn't quite manage to find any hidden tombs sadly. No matter though, amongst the many symbols splashed on this dress is the Eye of Horus, which of course drew my attention instantly!

I've been wearing this to death since I bought it, both because I love it and its loose-fitting nature makes it so easy to wear. I find it goes great with almost anything, particularly white pumps...

Faux Chanel No5 Perfume Bottle Phone Case!

DSC_5418

It's become part of my Saturday ritual now, walking along Manchester's Market Street negotiating a circled crowd of people looking on as a teenager either beatboxes, sings, plays guitar, juggles a football or does all at the same time whilst I'm trying to get to where I want to go. Lately though, I've noticed a bit of an influx all over the city centre of pop-up stalls selling all manner of phone cases ranging from cheap and tacky £1 cases through to expensive and tacky £20 cases. It just proves that trends are truly cyclical, I remember in my teens the big buzz was all about Nokia 3210 fascias!

Anyway, it certainly seems the market is more than just a bit saturated, as they all seem to sell the same huge range of cases in a wide variety of designs and colours and even online it doesn't really get much better. That being said I've dabbled with this latest trend, first off I bought an turquoise-cyan ombre number for my 4S, then I even designed my own, before finding a 'My Little Pony' style Unicorn.

Now that I've upgraded to the 5S, I've found the perfect case in the form of a replica Chanel No5 perfume bottle! It's a nice piano-black silicone number, though not of the softer variety you may be thinking of, that grips on to the phone snugly and unlike those pesky 4S covers, it's easy to remove without having to either break the case or your nails!

The case also comes with a chain, making it not only resemble a perfume bottle, but also a mini handbag. Cute!

I purchased this from my favourite Instagram Boutique: Dusty Diamonds for a snip at £20!

I've grown increasingly wary of shopping on instagram of late, as it seems there's a bit of a bandwagon full of people trying 'get rich quick' gathering a head of steam, but most of them sell pretty much the same items - yawn. Not Dusty Diamonds though, they seem to keep their range quite fresh and don't cause any unnecessary hassle. Oh and they're from Manchester. WIN!

Dusty Diamonds can be found on InstagramLINK and now you can even check out their brand spanking new websiteLINK
